Deriving a chemical formula

We can derive the chemical formula of a compound by the following steps given below.

 Step 1 :- Write down the symbols of the elements that make up the compound.

 Step 2 :- Write down the valency of each of the elements below their respective symbols.

 Step 3 :- Interchange the valencies and write them as subscripts next to the symbols.

 Step 4 :- Simplify the formula by dividing the valencies by a common factor, if any. If not divisible by any common number, leave the valencies as they are.
